In the summer of 2018, COPRO awarded Willemen Infra with the very first BENOR certificate for TRA 50 road concrete. Willemen Infra currently boasts no fewer than four certified plants. Plants in Bruges, Ghent, Schoten and Lummen make it possible to produce and deliver TRA 50-certified road concrete throughout all of Flanders.
Willemen Infra has been producing asphalt for road construction projects in Lummen for decades. The production of certified road concrete was added to the operations in 2020. âWe relocated our concrete plant from Hasselt to Lummen for this very purpose. As a result, we have now rolled out the production of TRA 50-certified road concrete over the entire Flanders region. The renovation of the E313 last summer over a distance of around 2.3 km in both driving directions from the Beringen complex is one of the first major motorway projects carried out in TRA 50,â says Dirk Christianen, Director of Asphalt Production at Willemen Infra.
Four certified plants
With certified plants in Bruges, Ghent, Schoten and Lummen, Willemen Infra can produce and deliver TRA 50-certified road concrete throughout all of Flanders, not only for the company sites, but also for third parties, since TRA 50 is an atypical concrete product that is difficult to combine with traditional in-situ concrete. Dirk Christianen adds, âCustomers interested in TRA 50 come to us first and we are more than happy to share our knowledge and expertise with other sites. That knowledge is the basis of everything we do, naturally combined with investments in machinery. After all, a good result requires both the right equipment and the right professionals.â
AWS was initially the facilitator of a quality mark for road concrete and Willemen Infra was without a doubt eligible for this. The COPRO took care of the certification aspect and once the certificate was ready to be awarded, Willemen Infra was ready to receive it. After all, Willemen Infra already used the concrete composition in its ready-mixed road concrete.
The range of certified compositions has since been expanded significantly and Willemen Infra now offers, among other products, a high-performing exposed road concrete in porphyry. âSo, weâre completely ready for the market. But although TRA 50 is required in all bids via the standard specifications 250, we are still often asked â and allowed â to convert this into prescribed road concrete. All the same, we continue to advocate a standardisation of TRA 50, for the simple reason that it is such a strong and high-quality product.â
Not surprisingly, Willemen Infra plays a pioneering role in this development. âThat is just how we do things. We very much enjoy playing such a role. When it comes to asphalt, we have also proven this with, for example, our products like AVT (Low Temperature Asphalt) and Drainphalt (water permeable asphalt). And we are actively involved in numerous research projects in partnership with knowledge institutions like the OCW and University of Antwerp. We consider this our obligation as a leading road builder in Flanders. We are also convinced that TRA 50-certified road concrete is the future standard. In terms of quality control, it provides significant added value for the site and projects like the E313 prove that the end result is of exceptional quality,â concludes Dirk Christianen.   Â
